Reflexology is a therapeutic method of relieving pain by stimulating predefined pressure points on the feets or hands.
By applying pressure to reflex areas, a reflexologist is said to remove energy blockages and promote health in the related area.
BRIEF HISTORY OF REFLEXOLOGY
The theory builds done in the 1980s by Sir henriy Head & Sir Charles Sherrington, who began to show through their research that a neurological relationship exists between the skin and the internal organs, and that the whole nervous system adjusts to a stimulus.
Although the roots of reflexolgy go back in ancient Egypt and China, William H. Fitzerald, an ear, nose, and throat doctor, introduced this concept of "zone therapy" in 1915.
American physiotherapist Eunice Ingham futher developed the zone theory in the 1930's into what is know as modern reflexology. Her opinion was that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.
WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?
Reflexology promotes healing by stimulating in the body and encouraging the flow of blood. In the process, reflexology not only quells the sensation of pain, but relieves the source of the pain as well.
According to reflexologists, pressure on the reflex points also helps to balance the nervous system and stimulates the release of endorphins that help to reduce pain and stress.
Anecdotally, reflexologists claim success in the treatment of a variety of conditions and injuries.
The body is divided into 10 vertical zones. In reflexology theory, every organ, valve, muscle, etc that lies within a zone can be accessed via a point or area on the feet or hands.
Frequent brief sessions of reflexology therapy are also recommended as an alternative to drug therapy for controling the muscle pain associated with fibromyalgia and for relieving difficult breathing caused by tightness in the muscles of the patient's neck and throat.
IS REFLEXOLOGY SUITABLE FOR ME?
Reflexology is a therapy which can be received by anyone at any age, from newborn babies to those receiving end of life care, and evryone in between.
It can help for stress, tension headaches, migraines, digestive disorders, arthritis, insomnia, blocked sinuses, cold, anxiety, constipation, skin allergies and many more.
However, there may occasionally be times when it is not suitable to provide a treatment. The best advice we can give you is to give our reflexologists a call and ask!
WILL REFLEXOLOGY HELP ME?
Reflexology is a very individual treatment which is tailored to you as a whole person, taking into account both physical and non-physical factors that might be affecting you well-being.
Some people find it works for them - some don't. The best way to find out is to try it!
HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER A REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT?
It is useful to give feedback to the reflexologist as this may show the response of your body to treatment. This in turn might help the reflexologist to tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs. After one or two treatments your body may respond in a very noticeable way.
Most people note a sense of well-being and relaxation; however, sometime people report feeling lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but this is usually transitory and reflexologists believe that it is part of the healing process.
Reflexology should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice.
